Five Year Plan for Fisheries Sub-Sector

The Planning Commission, Government of Pakistan (GoP), is developing the next Five Year Plan 2005-2010. In this context, working groups were formed for all the important sectors of the economy in order to prepare a draft plan in their respective sectors for consideration and approval by the GoP. One such group has been formed to cover Livestock, Dairy, Poultry and Fisheries.
In this context WWF – Pakistan, in collaboration with the Marine Fisheries Dept, Government of Pakistan organised a one-day consultative workshop on the Five Year Plan for Fisheries Sub-Sector. This workshop brought together various stakeholders from the Fisheries Sector.
Three working groups, each focusing on Marine Fisheries (at Balochistan and Sindh) and Research, developed strategies and action plans and determine role/responsibilities of respective departments. It is noted that scarcity of scientific studies and availability of relevant data on Marine Fisheries, lack of human resources development in the Fisheries sector, illegal fishing practices and non- availability of Microfinance facility are major growth retarding factors in Marine Fisheries sector.
Commodore S. Q. Raza, Director General Marine Fisheries Dept, stressed that marine fishery policy should be based on informed research and the ommunities should be engaged in the planning process.
Deputy Director General WWF – Pakistan, Dr. Ejaz Ahmad, Dr. Moazam from Marine Fisheries Dept, Dr. Mukhdom from University of Karachi, Mr. Ahmed Nadeem, Assistant Director Balochistan Coastal Development Authority also spoke on the occasion.
Forty plus participants, including representatives from Marine Fisheries Dept, Government of Pakistan and Government of Sindh, National Institute of Oceanography, Balochistan Coastal Development Authority, NGOs, CBOs, and various cademicians attended the workshop.
