Iqbal Qarshi new President WWF-Pakistan
Lahore: Mr. Iqbal Ahmad Qarshi was unanimously elected the new President of the Board of Trustees of World Wide Fund for nature-Pakistan in a recent Board meeting of the conservation organisation. The meeting was attended by Syed Babar Ali, Brig. Mukhtar Ahmed, Mrs. Nasreen Kasuri, Ms Spenta Captain Kandawalla, Himayatullah Khan, Khalid Mahmood, Dr. Kausar Malik, Qazi Azmat Isa, Dr. Bashir Wani, Dr. Feriha Peracha and Ali Habib. The Board members also thanked the outgoing President Altaf Saleem for his valuable contribution to the organisation.
Mr. Qarshi, while graciously accepting this challenging honourary assignment, committed to work with the other Board members and staff of the organisation to help improve the natural environment of Pakistan.
During this meeting the Board also took serious note of some development projects which may harm Pakistan’s environment. WWF-Pakistan is concerned about the development of the Bundal Island off the Karachi coast which includes an area of about 700 acres of mangrove forests and is also a habitat of important migratory birds and local fishermen. WWF-Pakistan is also seriously concerned about the ill-planned New Murree scheme, which will damage some of the only remaining natural habitat of Blue Pine forest ecosystem in the Punjab.
