Abdul Latif
gets WWF – Pakistan Conservation
Award
The Syed Asad Ali Conservation Award
2003 was presented to Abdul Latif,
of the remote village of Pekhonakar,
District Abottabad. The award was
presented to him in recognition
of his ceaseless efforts in safeguarding
guzara forests and conserving the
wildlife and flora of the region.
After 40 years of hard work and
struggle, 400 kanals of forest now
comprise naturally growing flora.
This forest is an important habitat
for wildlife and birds.
“Syed Asad Ali’s commitment
to, and passion for wildlife enabled
him to break new ground in the field
of conservation establishing, in
the process, a precedent which has
benefited individuals as well as
entire organisations dedicated to
the nature conservation movement,”
these views were expressed by President
WWF – Pakistan, Brig (Retd)
Mukhtar Ahmad. The award giving
ceremony was organised by WWF –
Pakistan on 7th January 2003. Talat
Wajahat, sister of the late Syed
Asad Ali was the chief guest. Director
General WWF – Pakistan, Ali
Hassan Habib and other WWF –
Pakistan board members were also
present on the occasion.
The recipient of
the award, Abdul Latif received
a cash reward of Rs 50,000, a commendation
certificate, and a memento of the
Indus dolphin. Initiated in 2000
and inspired by the acumen of conservationist
Syed Asad Ali, this award is a tribute
to his appreciation of the role
of conservation conscience as a
state of harmony between humanity
and nature. This award is given
for significant fieldwork in line
with the nature conservation priorities
in Pakistan.
Purpose
Syed Asad Ali Award for Nature Conservation
is awarded for significant field
work in line with the nature conservation
priorities in Pakistan. The Award
aims at recognizing the achievements
of conservationists.
Eligibility
The award will be granted to individuals
based on their personal contribution
to the cause of conservation.
Nomination
Every year applications will be
invited in February by placing an
advertisement in leading national
dailies.
Selection
The deadline for receiving nominations
this year will be 6th June 2003.
The list of all qualifying nominations
will be will be reported and confirmed
in the scientific committee meeting
in June.
The awards committee will forward
short listed nominations to the
scientific committee for consideration
in their September meeting.The scientific
committee will finalise 2-3 candidates
in the scientific committee meeting
of September. The nominations would
then be sent to the WWF –
Pakistan Board for consideration.The
WWF – Pakistan Board will
make the final selection of the
award recipient in its October Board
meeting.
The award will be
given in January every year.
Selection
Criteria
The Awards Committee, the Scientific
Committee, and the WWF Board will
shortlist candidates keeping in
mind their dedication and contribution
to nature conservation in Pakistan,
remarkable fieldwork and past achievements
regarding discovery of new facts
and an effort towards their dissemination.
These factors are kept in mind,
while assessing the work of candidates:
Dedication and contribution to nature
conservation in Pakistan.
Significant field work and past
achievements.
Discovery of new facts, and an effort
towards their dissemination.
Presentation
The recipient of the award will
receive the following:
Rs 50,000/-
A certificate signed by the President
of WWF – Pakistan and he chairman
of the Scientific Committee.
A memento of the Indus Dolphin with
an engraving, mentioning the date
of the Award. Individuals/Organisations
are invited to nominate suitable
candidates by sending a one-page
description of the candidate’s
conservation achievements and a
CV to:
