WWF – P Announces New President
Lahore: Altaf M Saleem was unanimously elected yesterday as the new president of WWF – P, during a meeting of Board members of WWF. He will commence his term for a period of three years. The Board of WWF – P along with staff bid farewell to outgoing president, Brig (Retd) Mukhtar Ahmed, in a ceremony held at the residence of Syed Babar Ali, President Emeritus, WWF – P, to mark the end of his three presidency terms from 1994 to 2003.

Syed Babar Ali, President Emeritus, WWF – P acknowledged Brig (Retd) Mukhtar Ahmed by saying, “Conservation of the environment and our natural resources is essential if we are to develop Pakistan sustainably for future generations. For that we need the active support and involvement of the community to preserve our natural heritage in the long run. In this regard, Brig (Retd) Mukhtar Ahmed has always been our willing partner, working tirelessly over the years to raise public awareness about the importance of nature conservation as well as soliciting support from different sectors of the community to achieve this worthy goal.


” To honour his commitment to WWF – Pakistan, the Board has appointed him as Vice President Emeritus of WWF – Pakistan"

Brig (Retd) Mukhtar Ahmed, welcomed Altaf M Saleem by saying, “WWF – P has come a long way for the last 32 years, striving for the cause of nature conservation in Pakistan through various projects at grassroots level, giving input in different policies, promoting conservation actions through education, awareness and capacity building of locals as well as professional staff.”

Altaf M Saleem has served as a Federal Minister/Chairman of Privatization Commission and is also a member of the Pakistan Environment Protection Council. He has served as a member of the board of trustees of WWF International as Vice President of WWF - Pakistan. Being a leading industrialist of the Crescent Group, he is also involved in the development of resource based organisations such as the Lahore University of Management Sciences and Leadership for Environment and Development.

In his farewell speech Brig Mukhtar Ahmed, pointed out past achievements of the organisation in the field of nature conservation. Brig Mukhtar Ahmed was presented mementos of his association with WWF – P for the last eleven years. WWF – P Board complimented and acknowledged his dedicated work for environmental issues within and outside the framework of WWF – P. He is involved with social development issues as well, such as being the founder of Human Welfare Nature Conservation Society and the Houbara Bustard Foundation International.
