Initiation of Pakistan Whale & Dolphin Group

Karachi: To raise general awareness and public interest in the conservation of cetacean (whales, dolphins, porpoises etc.) in Pakistan, and to promote the study and conservation of cetaceans in the country, WWF-Pakistan announces the initiation of the “Pakistan Whale and Dolphin Group” (PWDG) under the Darwin Initiative Project on the Conservation of Pakistan’s Marine Cetacean Biodiversity and Pelagic Environment.

According to Dr. Ejaz Ahmad, Deputy Director General WWF-Pakistan: “The Pakistan Whale and Dolphin Group will provide a platform for issues related to cetacean conservation and a way for like-minded people to help further their interests in whales, dolphins and porpoises. We welcome the people interested in joining to contact us”.

As a national group, the PWDG would become a source of information and support for the conservation of our whales, dolphins and porpoises. The group is open for general public and anyone with an interest in the conservation of cetaceans can become a member of the group.

The Darwin Initiative is currently funding the ongoing Cetacean Conservation Project (CCP) in Pakistan, which is being successfully run in collaboration with WWF-Pakistan, University Marine Biological Station Millport (Scotland), CEMB at University of Karachi, in addition to the valuable support by the British Council, Karachi and the Pakistan Wetlands Programme.

People with an interest in cetacean issues are invited to join and contribute their efforts to save the wonderful whales, dolphins and porpoises found in Pakistan. WWF encourages interested people to contact for more details on becoming a member of this national group.
