WWF committed to Mountains

Today on World Mountain Day WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) reiterates its commitment to protect nature. Pakistan is home to Nanga Parbat, the second highest peak of the world. Mountains are an essential part of our ecosystem. Bearing this in mind, WWF Pakistan has initiated different projects for conserving the biodiversity of the northern areas – the forests and different species including the endangered Snow Leopard.

To save the flagship and endangered species of Snow Leopard, WWF Pakistan is working in collaboration with the International Snow Leopard Trust. The habitat of the big cat is spread over an area of 81,000 Km, in the Hindu Kush mountains and in the Himalayas and Karakoram Mountain ranges.  Estimates predict that there are only 300-420 animals throughout Pakistan.

WWF projects include managing the Chitral Gol National Park, Machiara National Park and Khunjerab National Park. The organisation is also working to promote sustainable harvest of medicinal plants of Miandam Valley and Swat.
