Workshop on Eco-region Action Program for Indus Delta Eco-region (IDER)

WWF - Pakistan is organising a five days workshop on Biodiversity Visioning and Conservation Planning, for the Indus Delta Eco-region (IDER), which covers the whole of the Sindh province and the adjoining area of Punjab and Balochistan, from July 12th - 16th , 2004. It is important to note that the Indus Delta is placed at the top 40th position in the International Conservation priority list.

In the first two days, 20 eminent taxonomists will develop a biodiversity vision for the IDER, with complete conservation objectives and sub-regional priorities for the next fifty years. In the last three days, conservation targets for the immediate-term, mid-term and long-term will be formulated; milestones will be identified for each conservation target, including amphibians, flora, fauna, wetlands, fishes, migratory birds groups; department-specific action plans for next five years will be developed and the future course of action for the Indus Delta Eco-region will be planned.

The workshop is being organised based upon the study of “The Root Cause of Biodiversity Loss in 2000”, followed by the workshop which brought various stakeholders together in Dec 2002.

It is expected that the workshop on Eco-region Action Program (EAP) will be attended by representatives from various Departments of the Government of Sindh, including Fisheries & Livestock, Forestry & Wildlife, Environment, Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority, On-Farm Water Management, Planning and Development and the host WWF - Pakistan and guests from WWF - International.
