Details of the event
A series of one day awareness sessions
on environmental reporting have
been carried out it in Lahore, Islamabad
and Karachi which were organized
by WWF – Pakistan under a
project funded by the EU- Pakistan
Small Projects Facility that aims
to promote better environment practices
in the Textile Processing sector
of Pakistan. These sessions have
been carried out in collaboration
with Responsible Business Initiative
(RBI) and Confederation of Indian
Industry (CII). Resource persons
from RBI and CII had been engaged
to inform the participants about
the trends in Corporate Social Responsibility
in Pakistan and the Global Reporting
Initiative (GRI) Guidelines for
sustainability reporting.
Environmental reporting in developing
countries particularly in Pakistan
is a purely voluntary activity,
therefore it is necessary for companies
to perceive some tangible benefits
when establishing a business case
to report.
Ms. Ambreen Waheed from RBI briefed
the participants on Corporate Social
Responsibility issues. She talked
about CSR trends in Pakistan and
its importance especially in the
context of disclosure of information
or reporting in any public reports.
Mr. Hammad Naqi from WWF –
Pakistan talked about the status
and trends of environmental reporting
in Pakistan. He talked about voluntary
and mandatory reporting that exists
in Pakistan in the form of SMART
(Self Monitoring and Reporting Tools).
He also briefed the participants
about the Pakistan Environmental
Reporting Awards (PERA) and how
to apply in this award scheme.
Dr. Aditi Haldar from the Confederation
of Indian Industry (CII) briefed
the participants about the importance
of reporting, how and when to report
and the Global Reporting Initiative
(GRI) guidelines used globally to
report on environmental performance.
Aditi also gave examples from the
Indian Industries on how they have
reported on their environmental
performance and what benefits have
they gained by doing so.
WWF – Pakistan feels that
the trend of reporting on environmental
performance should be enhanced in
Pakistan as a small number of companies
are producing non-financial reports
although over the last 10 years,
there has been a notable increase
in the quality of disclosure in
the global context. In keeping with
their global commitment WWF –
Pakistan in association with ACCA
Pakistan have launched their Pakistan
Environmental Reporting Awards.
This award scheme aims to support
the development of corporate environmental
reporting techniques, in the light
of increased demand from stakeholders
for corporate environmental accountability.
