Details of the event

A series of two-day training workshop on Better Environmental Management Practices with focus on Eco-labeling and EMS in the Textile Processing Sector of Pakistan was organized by WWF – Pakistan and National Environmental Consulting in Karachi, Faisalabad and Lahore as part of a project funded by EU- Small Projects Facility. The aim is to generate knowledge on BEMP’s in textile processing sector through research and information exchange with European Union (EU).

As part of the project the Cleaner production options provided in the local and European context will be documented and communicated to the major stakeholders in the textile processing sector through workshops.

International consultants from Dutch firms had been invited to brief the local industry professionals about international buyers requirements and demands and better process control methods. Mr. Aksel Roorda (EMS Expert) from Royal Haskoning Netherlands, Ms. Marrieke Weerdesteijn (Eco Label Expert) from CREM Netherlands and Mr. Anton Kaasjager (BEMPs Expert) from TNO Netherlands have been invited as key resource persons for this event.

Ms. Marrieke from CREM, a Dutch Consulting firm, informed the participants about the environmental issues relevant to the Textile Sector in general today. She also talked about why European buyers are more concerned about such issues and what are the requirements of the western buyers. Marrieke also talked about the eco-label and Oeko Tex standards for Textile Industries in order to prepare the local industry on future demands of the global market.

Mr. Anton Kaasjager from TNO, a Textile training Institute in Netherlands, about Hazardous chemicals, exposure limits and their handling and safety issues for professionals dealing in them. Mr. Aksel Roorda talked about EMS for industries and the ISO 14001 requirements. Representatives from 3 certification agencies SGS, DNV and BVQI were also called to inform the participants about their requirements for ISO 14001.

WWF – Pakistan has also signed an MoU with All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) and NEC to conduct the training workshop under the project. The project also aims to promote environmental reporting in the sectors through organizing awareness session in Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi.
