A tribute

Mr. Shazado Bhayo, Former Game Officer SWD and a dedicated conservationist for Indus Dolphin Conservation Project passed away on Sunday June 18, 2006 at 4:00am (Inna Lillahay Wa Inna Alaiyhe Rajaeoon). WWF – Pakistan expresses its heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of a great conservationist and prays to Almighty Allah to grant the bereaved family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. He will always be remembered for his valuable services rendered as a conservationist.

In spite of his limited formal education, Shahzado Bhayo, commendably performed his duties at the Indus Dolphin Reserve for the last over twenty five years. He joined the Sindh Wildlife Department as a Game Watcher in 1968 when he was only 23 and continued working till his retirement. In association with Giorgio Pilleri and other renowned scientists, he carried out biological studies of the Indus Dolphin - a rare endemic species of Pakistan. In recognition of his valuable services towards nature conservation he was also awarded a merit certificate from His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. His immense courage and dedicated efforts stand as a beacon of hope and inspiration for future conservationists. He was the recipient of Syed Asad Ali Award, conservation award, in recognition of his conservation efforts for Indus River Dolphin in the year 2001.
Born on January 1, 1945, he joined the Sindh Wildlife Department as a Game Watcher in 1968. Later he was promoted as a Game Inspector on Septemver12, 1983. He became a Game Officer on April 14, 1990 and continued working in the same capacity till his retirement in July 1, 2004.

A man of great qualities, he was known and respected among his peers for his honesty, tolerance, hard work, dedication and sincerity. He was always ready to take up work challenges and worked towards achieve the desired goals.

He was the key person in carrying out the comprehensive Indus River Dolphin survey with WWF – Pakistan. He was also the focal person in establishing contacts with the local landlords and facilitated the WWF – Pakistan team in visiting the sensitive areas. He also assisted the WWF – Pakistan team in conducting a year long Indus Dolphin Habitat Quality Monitoring survey in the year 2005.
