WWF – Pakistan holds Snow Leoprd Network meeting

LAHORE: WWF – Pakistan is holding, for the first time in Pakistan, a meeting of the Snow Leopard Network Committee from May 23-24, 2006 in Nathiagali in which key conservationists from Pakistan and around the world will meet. On May 25, 2006 decisions taken in the meeting shall be shared with the participants of the session and also with media through a press release.
Snow leopard is an animal of high altitude with tremendous ecological importance. This animal is found in Pakistan and 11 more countries of the world. Because of its predatory habits and beautiful skin, this animal is being killed by herders and pelt traders, a practice that has put the Snow leopard at risk of extinction.
Although several national and international organisations are helping to protect Snow leopard, the International snow leopard Trust, based in Seattle, USA has a special mandate for it. This is under this organisation, that a Snow Leopard Network (SLN) was established about 4 years ago. So far, more than 200 individuals and organisations from all over the world have joined the network to work for the effective conservation of the snow leopard, its prey and their natural habitat to the benefit of people and biodiversity.
In order to achieve the objectives of the SLN, a steering committee was established in 2002. In December 2005, elections in the network were held to elect a steering committee for the next 4 years. Six members, one each from USA, UK, Mongolia, China, Uzbekestan, and India; and one Chair from Pakistan were elected. Mr. Ashiq Ahmad Khan, Chief Technical Advisor, WWF - Pakistan was elected unopposed, as Chair.
