PAKISTAN WETLANDS PROJECT (PWP)

Pakistan is home to about 225 significant man-made and natural wetlands. Pakistan's wetlands and their rich biological resources are threatened by over-exploitation, habitat destruction and polluted environments. The main causes for degradation of wetlands are ineffective management, poor stakeholder participation and lack of coordination in management strategies.

PWP takes a broad participatory approach to promote increased public, institutional and policy support for wetland conservation. PWP was prepared on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Environment for funding through the Global Environment Facility in co-operation with UNDP. The programme will be implemented over seven years and US $ 11.8 million will be invested.

Implemented by WWF-Pakistan, the PWP is based on a strategy consisting of two sub-sets of objectives. The first addresses issues at the national level and the other deals with the management of four selected wetlands complexes, carefully chosen to broadly represent conditions in each of four wetlands eco-regions in the country.
