Building Capacity on Climate Change Adaptation in Coastal Areas of Pakistan

In January 2011, WWF – Pakistan (WWF-P) was awarded a project by the EC funds from ‘Environment and Natural Resource Thematic Programme’ budget line (ENRTP). The project “Building Capacity on Climate Change adaptation in Coastal Areas of Pakistan” (CCAP) will be implemented in collaboration with WWF – UK and Lead Pakistan.

The overall project objective is that “By 2025, coastal areas in Pakistan and neighbouring regions [will] have climate resilient ecosystems to support the livelihoods / lives of coastal communities.”While the specific objective for the 5 year period (2011-2015) of the project is: “By 2015, government and community climate adaptation capacity is increased and water governance strengthened, to improve climate resilience of Indus Delta ecosystem processes on which coastal communities depend, supported by regional and transboundary cooperation on adaptation in river deltas.”

Islamabad: In the list of countries most vulnerable to disasters due to climate change, Pakistan’s ranking has been downgraded to 16 in 2010-2011 from its previous position at 29 a year earlier, according to the Climate Change Vulnerability Index by Maple Croft, an organisation which maps over 100 global risks.

Tribune Pak: Pakistan won the ‘Robin Hood’ award at the UN climate talks for proposing financial transaction tax (FTT) as an innovative source of financing the Green Climate Fund (GCF), on Saturday. The award was given to Pakistan by the youth constituency of the UNFCCC, known as YOUNGO.
