Protection of Biodiversity in Jhangar Valley, Chakwal

The forest of Jhanger Valley covers an area of 3,053 hectares, which is a communal forest (Shamilat) and thus, the common property of the communities living in the villages in Jhanger Valley.

The area presents typical dry sub-tropical broad-leaf vegetation, comprising of small to medium sized trees of Kao (Olea ferruginea) and Phulai (Acacia modesta). The Punjab Urial (Ovis orientalis punjabiensis) is an endangered species found in the Valley. The aim of this project is to increase the forest cover by planting appropriate tree species, to protect the natural habitat of important and endemic species and enhance the interest of local government authorities and communities in the project activities. The conservation team, by involving the local community, has been quite successful in achieving many objectives. 12 Village Organisations (VOs) were established in 16 villages in the valley. With the cooperation of the local community, a Community Based Organisation, the Jhangar Valley Conservation and Development Committee (JVCDC), was set up and over 648 hectares of communal forest were declared a Protected Area. 20,000 fast growing trees and 200 fruit plants were distributed amongst the community. A nursery for fast growing tree species, with a capacity for 20,000 plants, was also established.
