This unit was established to address the `brown' issues of the environment. 'Brown' issues are problems related to industrial and urban pollution. The Division co-ordinates activities to promote various environmental management techniques to minimise pollution. The EPU holds Environmental Auditing Training workshops to encourage adoption of Environmental Management Standards, and has also provided input for the development of the Environmental Protection Act of Pakistan. Some of the projects of the EPU are the Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Programme, Hudiara Drain project, and an Environmental Guide Book. The goals of the Environmental Pollution Unit are to:
Help minimize pollution, wasteful exploitation, and consumption of resources
Liaise with WWF International's Global Toxic Chemical Initiative.
Review environmental pollution problems in Pakistan and develop initiatives related to fresh water, industrial and urban pollution and toxic substances.
Provide technical expertise on pollution legislation, energy policy and environmental impact assessments.
Help build a network to support NGOs working on pollution issues in Pakistan and develop joint activities.
