GIS Section of GCIC

Introduction

The World is becoming a global village with all inception of enhanced information technology. People increasingly rely on visualization, and GIS gives a vast array of visualization possibilities, techniques and information according to individual requirements.
Geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information.
Geographic Information System technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with unique visualizations and geographic analysis. These abilities distinguish GIS from other information systems and make it valuable for a wide range of public and private enterprises. GIS data can be used in multipurpose decision-making applications and is vital in the agricultural, forestry, tourism, infrastructural, and development sectors. In a nut shell, GIS gives an easy way to make proper decisions for implementing and analyzing projects.

Gilgit Conservation and Information Centre (GCIC) was established in 1999 with the financial assistance of Japanese Embassy through its Gross Roots Assistance Program. Its mission is to support Environmental NGOs and to assist communities in the pursuit of their respective project.

The GIS section of GCIC is providing technical facilities to all stakeholders in, developing landcover, Hazard Risk maps and habitat maps particularly for projects, research and other purposes. It also provides scientific facility to situation analysis of natural resources of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Specific Objective:
  • Knowledge about the innovations in GIS/RS
  • Importance of GIS/RS applications and its utilization
  • How to use GIS/RS tool for calculating Landuse/landcover, forest covers assessment, boundary delineation; Village based Hazard risk mapping
