Rangelands

Rangelands are land on which native vegetation is mostly grass, grass-like plants, forbs and shrubs (Khan, 2003). Because of physical limitations they are not suitable for agriculture but are good sources of forage for free grazing animals as well as a source of wood products, water and wildlife (NLH/AKRSP et al., 2002). Rangelands occupy 2.1 million ha of the Northern Areas and are the primary source of forage for livestock. Thus they play an important role in the rural economies of this region.
