It is the only environmental event in the city which involves schools, families and children. It is a means of education through entertainment. 15-02-2008 WWF Pakistan’s statement on the role of wild birds in the spread of Avian Influenza outbreaks in Pakistan After the recent outbreak of the H5N1 strain of Avian Influenza and the subsequent allegations that migratory birds are responsible for the spread of the disease to local poultry farms WWF Pakistan is concerned that such statements could have serious repercussion against wild bird populations and their habitats.
31-12-2007 Establishment of Pakistan Whale and Dolphin society Leading marine scientists including representatives of 10 different governmental and non-governmental organisations have agreed to form the first society to be dedicated to the study, promotion and conservation of Pakistan’s Whales and Dolphins. The inaugural meeting will take place in Karachi on January 5th 2008. The meeting is being convened by Commander Liaquat Ali (PN), who has been elected as the provisional honorary secretary of the society.

11-12-2007 WWF committed to Mountains
Today on World Mountain Day WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) reiterates its commitment to protect nature. Pakistan is home to Nanga Parbat, the second highest peak of the world. Mountains are an essential part of our ecosystem. Bearing this in mind, WWF Pakistan has initiated different projects for conserving the biodiversity of the northern areas – the forests and different species including the endangered Snow Leopard. 24-9-2007 Engro and WWF join hands to conserve the Indus Dolphin Engro Foods have contributed Rs. 4.5 million to WWF Pakistan’s Indus Dolphin Conservation. A ceremony to mark this agreement was held on Friday at WWF Pakistan’s Wetland Centre at Sandspit. This has been the largest Pakistani corporate sector contribution to WWF – Pakistan.

20-03-2007 Importance of environmental reporting stressed at WWF and EC workshop Lahore: The EU with the help of WWF and other national and international NGOs was helping preserve the environment and in the last ten years has invested more than 40 million euros in NWFP, Punjab and Sindh stated Imran Ashraf, Development Advisor, European Commission while inaugurating the two-day “An Update on Environmental Issues for Journalists” workshop organised by WWF and sponsored by EC at a local hotel on Monday March 20th. The objective of this workshop is to sensitise the media about environmental issues.
15-03-2007 WWF appreciates PM’s response to its water campaign WWF-Pakistan is thankful to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz for his positive response to its Pakistan’s Waters at Risk campaign regarding water contamination in the country. WWF has demanded that Water Environmental Standards be developed and enforced, concerned agencies and industries be compelled to treat industrial and municipal wastewater and a National Water Quality Monitoring Commission be immediately established.

11-12-2006 Initiation of Pakistan Whale & Dolphin Group Karachi: To raise general awareness and public interest in the conservation of cetacean (whales, dolphins, porpoises etc.) in Pakistan, and to promote the study and conservation of cetaceans in the country, WWF-Pakistan announces the initiation of the “Pakistan Whale and Dolphin Group” (PWDG) under the Darwin Initiative Project on the Conservation of Pakistan’s Marine Cetacean Biodiversity and Pelagic Environment.
22-11-2006 WWF fits collar on Snow Leopard for the first time ever! Chitral: A female snow leopard was captured and collared in Chitral Gol National Park, in northern Pakistan, on 17th November 2006. In the first of its kind study, the 35 kg (78 pound) leopard was fitted with a GPS-Satellite collar that will provide researchers with an unprecedented amount of precise data on snow leopard movements and habitat use.
14-11-2006 Beach Cleaning Activity at Sandspit Karachi: More than 500 participants, mostly students from various CDGK schools of North Karachi and Kemari Towns, WWF Community Girls School, Kaka Pir Village, and the staff of WWF and Sindh Wildlife department removed litter from Karachi’s Sandspit Beach, a globally significant turtle nesting beach, Tuesday 14th November, 2006. The activity was organised by WWF with the support of Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), as a part of Indian Ocean South East Asia (IOSEA) ‘year of turtle 2006’ celebrations. Engineer Naeem ur Rehman Akhoond, Sr. General Manager, SSGC was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
08-11-2006 Beach Cleaning Activity at Sandspit Karachi: WWF, with the support of ICI Pakistan Limited, organised a beach cleaning activity on Wednesday 8th November, 2006 at Sandspit. WWF has been endeavouring to save the marine turtles that come to nest on the beach along the Karachi coast. Pakistan is a signatory to the IOSEA Agreement on conservation of marine turtles. The IOSEA has declared 2006 as the ‘Year of Turtle’
03-11-2006 Iqbal Qarshi new President WWF-Pakistan Lahore: Mr. Iqbal Ahmad Qarshi was unanimously elected the new President of the Board of Trustees of World Wide Fund for nature-Pakistan in a recent Board meeting of the conservation organisation. The meeting was attended by Syed Babar Ali, Brig. Mukhtar Ahmed, Mrs. Nasreen Kasuri, Ms Spenta Captain Kandawalla, Himayatullah Khan, Khalid Mahmood, Dr. Kausar Malik, Qazi Azmat Isa, Dr. Bashir Wani, Dr. Feriha Peracha and Ali Habib. The Board members also thanked the outgoing President Altaf Saleem for his valuable contribution to the organisation.

26-09-2006 WWF welcomes Diclofenac banning WWF welcomes the decision of the Ministry of Health to ban Diclofenac in veterinary use. This ban and its effective implementation will ensure a safe environment for vulture species in Pakistan. The widespread use of Diclofenac in the livestock husbandry has led to more than 90% decline in three species of vultures in South Asia. Diclofenac is also banned in India and drug manufacturers in Nepal have already started manufacturing the recommended alternative drug, Meloxicam.

An example of such an imbalance in Pakistan is Murree. Despite legislation barring structures higher than 25 feet there are a number of multiple storey buildings in Murree.

07-09-2006 Satellite transmitters installed onmarine turtles In order to monitor the movement pattern of marine turtles, WWF – Pakistan, the largest conservation NGO in the country, in collaboration with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and the Sindh Wildlife Department, a installed satellite transmitter on a marine turtle at Sandspit, Karachi coast on Thursday, 7th September, 2006. Mr. Majid Ali Al-Mansouri, Secretary General, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
02-08-2006 WWF – Pakistan initiates a consultative process to assist Ministry of Environment Lahore: WWF has initiated a consultative process for developing ‘National Surface Water Classification Criteria and Irrigation Water Quality Guidelines’. A meeting was held in this regard on August 2, 2006 at WWF – Pakistan Head Office. The initiative has been taken under Phase II of Hudiara Drain Project. Representatives from research and academia, Federal EPA, Punjab EPD, Irrigation Department (Directorate of Land Reclamation), Federal Environmental Management Unit (NDP), Provincial Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA), Agriculture Department (Soil Fertility Cell) participated in the meeting.

25-07-2006 Payment for Environmental Services Scheme: Case for Nathiagali NATHIAGALI: A workshop ‘Towards A Payment for Environmental Services Scheme: Case for Nathiagali’ was held on 22nd July,2006 in Mukshpuri Hotel, Dunga Gali by WWF-Pakistan. WWF-Pakistan has recently completed a feasibility study to assess whether a mechanism by the name of ‘Payments for Environmental Services’ (PES) can be set up in Nathiagali that would help manage its unique environment by rewarding those who are involved in managing the natural resources of the area.

08-06-2006 Protect oceans now - save fisheries and reduce poverty LAHORE – World Ocean’s Day is held annually on June 8th in honour of our planet’s most diverse and threatened ecosystem. Created in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, it is hoped that World Ocean’s Day will help raise awareness of the threats to ocean life. The world’s oceans are under greater pressure than ever before. More than three-quarters of the world’s fish stocks are fished to their maximum capacity, recovering from collapse or over-fished. Important habitats are being lost and damaged. If present rates of destruction continue, 60 per cent of the world's coral reefs will be destroyed within the next 30 years.
23-05-2006 WWF – Pakistan holds Snow Leoprd Network meeting LAHORE: WWF – Pakistan is holding, for the first time in Pakistan, a meeting of the Snow Leopard Network Committee from May 23-24, 2006 in Nathiagali in which key conservationists from Pakistan and around the world will meet. On May 25, 2006 decisions taken in the meeting shall be shared with the participants of the session and also with media through a press release.

19-03-2006 WWF - Pakistan Nature Carnival 2006 Lahore–WWF - Pakistan organised the annual Nature Carnival on Sunday 19th of March, 2006 at Ali Institute of Education Ferozepur Road, Lahore. The event featured a Nature Exhibition by different schools of the city. These exhibits were prepared on various environmental themes which were Man-Leopard Conflict, Marine and Freshwater Turtle and Natural Disasters etc.
