WWF – Pakistan Celebrates Earth Day with PERA Awards and ACCA – WWF Business Earth Talk

Islamabad: ACCA and WWF – Pakistan organized Pakistan Environmental Reporting Awards (PERA) as well as celebrated Earth Day 2010 on April 22, 2010 by holding a Business Earth Talk.

Business Earth Talk was designed to reward transparency in reporting and to facilitate discussion of the challenges being faced by business leaders in their pursuit of transparency of business operations and reporting.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Arif Masud Mirza, head of ACCA Pakistan, said “though there is a success in appealing to the thinking process of Pakistan business community, still more pro-active approach is needed involving local and multinational companies.”

ACCA – WWF Business Earth Talk included discussion forums on “Water: The Next Carbon” and “Disclosing Transparency: The Changing Landscape”. The panel discussions were conducted by renowned figures from the Pakistan business community, the ACCA and the Director General of WWF – Pakistan, Mr Ali Habib Hassan. The insightful and detailed discussions were followed by the ACCA – WWF PERA Ceremony for the previous year. Mr. Hamid Ullah Jan Afridi, Federal Minister of the Environment, was the chief guest of the event.

For ACCA – WWF PERA 2009, a total of 58 reports were received. The short listing committee comprising of impartial members selected 19 reports, which were further reviewed by a panel of judges. Engro Chemicals Pakistan Ltd and Attock Refinery Ltd were given a joint winner award for Best Sustainability report under local listed companies. As none of the report could score 70% of the marks, no report was selected from Best Sustainability Report (local unlisted) category. However, sunny Trust was given a letter of appreciation by the panel of judges on regularly submitting their sustainability report. AES Lal Pir was selected as the winner in Best Environmental Reporting Awards (multinational) category and National Refinery Ltd was given Best Environmental Reporting Award under local unlisted category. Qarshi Industries was given an award of commendation on their commitment to environmental reporting.

The chief guest of the ceremony, Mr. Hamid Ullah Jan Afridi congratulated the winners and appreciated the efforts put forth by ACCA and WWF – Pakistan. He encouraged corporate sector to participate in such awards and play their role in environmental sustainability. The Director General WWF – Pakistan, Mr. Ali Hassan Habib congratulated the winners and encouraged them to learn from their experiences in the closing remarks of the ceremony. While improving their drawbacks, he emphasized that the participants should keep on trying to win such awards by improving their transparent environmental reporting and play a strong role as an environmentally aware and responsible business community.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to bring together stakeholders from different walks of life and gave a chance to discuss current trends in best sustainable practices involving the nature of the business reporting.
