GIS Training and Consultative Workshop Organized for the Forest Cover Assessment of Balochistan

Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), Pakistan Wetlands Programme (PWP) and WWF – Pakistan organized two days’ training workshop entitled “District-wise Forest Cover Assessment of Pakistan” at SPARS SUPARCO, Quetta from 28th May to 29th May 2012. The training sessions were mainly focused on introduction to Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS). The event was attended by the officials of Balochistan Forest Department, International Union of Conservation of Nature, SUPARCO and WWF – Pakistan.

WWF – Pakistan and SUPARCO are assessing the forest cover of eight selected districts of Balochistan under the ‘National Forest Cover Assessment’ initiative. Under the project, draft forest cover maps have been developed using SPOT-5 satellite data and Satellite Remote Sensing techniques. The training workshop included consultative session for the verification of forest cover maps developed by SUPARCO, PWP and WWF – P has been arranged. Twenty five participants from Balochistan Forest and Wildlife Department, IUCN and SUPARCO attended the workshop. During the consultative sessions, five districts out of eight were selected for collection of sampling points to assess the accuracy of the forest cover maps.

The closing session was chaired by chaired by Mr. Taaj Muhammad, Chief Conservator Forest, Balochistan.
