WWF – P Shows Concern over Establishment of Waste to Energy Plants
L ahore, Pakistan – WWF – Pakistan expresses a sense of alarm on City District Government Lahore’s (CDGL) efforts to install two Waste-To-Energy plants in Lahore to dispose off municipal solid waste in collaboration with a Chinese and American company. Installation of burn technology Waste To Energy projects in Lahore is surprising at a time when world over it has become outdated. This is a classic case of dumping dirty technology in the developing country like Pakistan.

 

WWF – P’s joint promotion with Chen One.
WWF – P will launch a fundraising activity in the coming week in the form of a display stall at Chen One, one of the country’s leading chain stores. This fundraising -cum- awareness raising activity will continue until the final days of Ramadan.

WWF – P Announces New President

Lahore: Altaf M Saleem was unanimously elected yesterday as the new president of WWF – P, during a meeting of Board members of WWF. He will commence his term for a period of three years. The Board of WWF – P along with staff bid farewell to outgoing president, Brig (Retd) Mukhtar Ahmed, in a ceremony held at the residence of Syed Babar Ali, President Emeritus, WWF – P, to mark the end of his three presidency terms from 1994 to 2003.

Great Sea Turtle Adventure

The night of 18th May 2003 was dark, even though the stars were out and shone silkily in the sky. Babar Hussain, WWF – Pakistan’s Turtle Conservation Officer was out on one of his nightly rounds of Sandspit Beach in Karachi. He walked the whole length of the beach, then, towards dawn, turned inwards into the backwaters mudflat.

Famous Singer Visits WWF - Pakistan

June 25th 2003: The renowned Pakistani singer, Junaid Jamshed, recently visited WWF - Pakistan Head Office. This visit was related to his recent interest in the role of conservation in Islam. "A good Muslim should actively participate in protecting the beauty of nature, by strongly condemning its destruction", remarked Junaid Jamshed with firm conviction. He backed his arguments with sound Islamic reasoning and Hadiths by saying, "Planting trees is Sadqa Jaaria."

29th April,2003:Famous singer Jawad Ahmad has become WWF - Pakistan's new Goodwill Ambassador. On a visit to WWF - P Head Office, he vowed to provide support to WWF - Pakistan in raising environmental awareness.

WWF - Pakistan announces 3 New Wetlands Sites

2nd Feb,2003: Each year on 2nd February, World Wetlands Day is celebrated around the world to educate the masses in the growing concern over depletion of wetlands. In context of the celebration of 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater by UN, Pakistan has identified three new wetlands sites of international importance. The three new added wetlands sites are Indus Delta (472,800 ha), Rann of Kutch (566,375 ha) and Deh Akro (20,500 ha) situated in the province of Sindh. These sites gain importance due to their unique biodiversity and habitat provision to a variety of species. Pakistan now has a total of 19 Ramsar sites.

Abdul Latif gets WWF – Pakistan Conservation Award

The Syed Asad Ali Conservation Award 2003 was presented to Abdul Latif, of the remote village of Pekhonakar, District Abottabad. The award was presented to him in recognition of his ceaseless efforts in safeguarding guzara forests and conserving the wildlife and flora of the region. After 40 years of hard work and struggle, 400 kanals of forest now comprise naturally growing flora. This forest is an important habitat for wildlife and birds.
