WWF – Pakistan concerned over cutting of Eucalyptus trees by PHA
LAHORE – WWF – Pakistan has raised its concern over the cutting of mature Eucalyptus in the park (Managed by PHA) located opposite Liberty market on the directives of Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) recently. WWF – Pakistan fears that these trees are being cut without any scientific planning and plantation of any substitute trees has not been planned so far.

 

Minister of Environment visits WWF - Pakistan

LAHORE– Makhdoom Ashfaq Ahmed, Minister of Environment Punjab, visited the Head Office of WWF – Pakistan on December 26, 2005 to familiarise with the working of the WWF - Pakistan. Ali Hassan Habib, Director General WWF – Pakistan welcomed the honourable Minister and gave him an introductory presentation on WWF – Pakistan, its various on-going projects and what it stands for.


 

WWF – Pakistan thinks that the birds must be given a protection in the Governor House.

With reference to a news item published in Daily The Nation on the 16th of December 2005 regarding the installation of devices to keep the birds away in the Governor House Lahore, WWF – Pakistan is concerned about the decision of installing devices that repel bats and other scavenger birds from an area.


 

US Consulate provides housing facility to the Orphan Snow Leopard Cub

LAHORE– The US consulate in Islamabad offered the Federal Ministry of Environment a permanent facility to an orphan Snow Leopard cub that was rescued by WWF – Pakistan in July 2005 in a US Zoo. WWF – Pakistan opposes this idea and feels that a permanent facility of this rapidly growing cub should be developed in the Northern Area.

 

 

Cetacean conservation project launched with international partnership
After a year of preparation, London University Marine Biological Station (UMBS) Millport in Scotland, WWF – Pakistan, and Centre of Excellence in Marine Biology (CEMB), University of Karachi has launched a three year project on Pakistan’s endangered cetaceans, entitled the “Cetacean Conservation Project”.

 


WWF - Pakistan join hands with UN - HABITAT to develop low cost environment friendly shelter for earthquake affected areas

WWF - Pakistan has formed a partnership with UN-HABITAT, a United Nations Agency, to produce a low cost shelter for the people living in the Alpine region of Pakistan that have been affected by the recent earthquake.

 

A tribute

This is a letter that was sent by 'A nameless pilot' of the Pakistan Army, who airlifted WWF - Pakistan Team in Machiara Village, to Ms Salma Omar, stationed at Head Office WWF – Pakistan, appreciating her and her team's concern and relief efforts for the earthquake affectees in Machiara National Park.

 

Situation of Palas Valley after the earthquake on October 8, 2005

WWF – Pakistan 's ‘Annual Lucky Draw 2005' held

LAHORE–WWF – Pakistan held its ‘Annual Lucky Draw 2005' at Ali Institute of Education on October 13, 2005 at 2 PM. Mr Ali Bokhary, Head Marketing and Fundraising WWF – Pakistan, officiated the event along with Mr Waseem A Mehmood (General Manager Marketing Shezan International), Mr Masood Ahmad Khan (Regional Manager Rafhan) and Mr. Haseeb Farid (Brand Manager Packages Limited). A large number of people had gathered to witness the grand balloting and anxiously waited for the results to be announced, while excitedly clutching the tab of tickets in their hands.

Impact upon WWF - Pakistan staff and partner communities

Pakistan was hit by a devastating earthquake ever recorded in its history on October 8, 2005 (Saturday). The Pakistan administered region of Kashmir , and other mountain regions have been badly affected. The extent of damage to life and infrastructure is still to be established. The estimate is that over 500 villages in Kashmir have been flattened, over 30,000 people have lost their lives, and millions have become homeless.

WWF – Pakistan releases a Green Turtle back into the sea

Mr. Sebastiao Rodrigues rescued a one-year old Green Turtle, which was released by ICI Chief, Mr. John R Stoney in the presence of Mr. Rodrigues and nearly 400 school students and teachers on Sep 26, 2005 on the occasion of ‘The Beach Cleaning Day', organised by WWF – Pakistan to formally launch ICI sponsored ‘Save the turtle project'.

School students remove more than 2000 kg of plastic waste from the Sandspit Turtle Beach

WWF – Pakistan organised a ‘Beach Cleaning Activity’ on Monday, September 26, 2005 at Sandspit / Hawksbay, Karachi. This activity was the part of WWF-Pakistan’s Marine Turtle Conservation Initiative in the area. ICI Pakistan Limited continues to support WWF – Pakistan’s efforts to save the marine turtles that come to nest on these beaches. This particular event marked the beginning of the Marine Turtle Conservation Initiatives for the current nesting season.

ACCA-WWF Pakistan pledge to promote Environmental Reporting in Corporate Sector

ACCA-WWF Pakistan Environmental Reporting Awards (PERA) were launched in 2001. WWF – Pakistan Panda Shop opens at Lahore Zoo

LAHORE–WWF – Pakistan in collaboration with the Lahore Zoo opened a gift shop at the Lahore Zoo on August 24, 2005 . Chief Guest, Captain (Retd) Rao Iftikhar Ahmad, Chairman Zoo Management Committee along with Director General Wildlife and Parks, Punjab inaugurated the WWF – Pakistan Panda Product Shop at the Lahore Zoo.

 

Moving towards solutions

With reference to the recent leopard-man conflict in Galliat and Thandiani surrounding areas, where such incidents happened, WWF - Pakistan visited the affected areas and held consultations with local influential and officials of the NWFP Wildlife Department.

 


WWF – Pakistan strives to promote peaceful existence between man and nature

LAHORE – Terror and fear prevails in places where 6 women were killed, reportedly, by leopards in different parts of District Abbottabad and also a part of District Mansehra.

 


WWF – Pakistan concern and stance on the killing of leopards

LAHORE– WWF – Pakistan shares the grief of several families in Galliat that have lost their loved ones to recent killings, reportedly by the common leopard. This is a huge loss indeed.

 


WWF – Pakistan lauds the provision of natural gas for Murree


WWF – Pakistan lauds the Sui Northern Gas Company for committing to provide natural gas for Murree. By providing this alternative energy source, the cutting of trees for fuel wood by the local communities will reduce immensely. It is hoped that this facility will be extended to the communities living in the buffer zones of forest reserve areas so that pressure on the remaining natural forests is relieved.

 

Floods linked to deforestation
WWF – appeals to stop deforestation and increase in forest cover

LAHOREWWF – Pakistan , alarmed by damages caused by the recent floods in the country, has appealed to the public and private sector to take tangible measures to stop deforestation, especially in the northern areas where people are dependent on the forests for their survival. There is dire need to find out alternate and sustainable livelihood methods to ease off pressures from this precious natural resource.

 


WWF - Pakistan rescues Snow Leopard cub

WWF – Pakistan rescued a six weeks old Snow Leopard cub in the Northern Areas. A local in Naltar Valley had removed two cubs from the wild, unfortunately, one of them died. The local informed the WWF – Pakistan and on receiving information, WWF – Pakistan staff went to Naltar Valley and recovered the surviving cub

 

WWF – Pakistan releases a Pangolin back into habitat

Lahore–WWF - Pakistan safely released a Pangolin (Scaly Anteater) back into the wild in the Lahore Park in Raiwind.
Mr. Salman Iqbal, a WAPDA official, had brought the Pangolin to his residence after he found it being harassed by children just outside the Lahore Zoo, where someone had brought it to be sold to the Zoo authorities. Mr Salman Iqbal then contacted WWF – Pakistan and asked for their assistance in its protection and management.

 

River Dolphins in freshwater battle against extinction, WWF warns

Lahore - On the eve of World Water Day, WWF - Pakistan warns that the Indus River Dolphin's population is in severe decline due to polluted water, fragmented population due to barrages, strandings in the irrigation canals due to water diversion and entanglement in fishing nets and has taken an initiative to save one of the world's most endangered mammal.

 

WWF - Pakistan Nature Carnival 2005

Lahore–WWF - Pakistan organised the Annual Nature Carnival on Sunday 27th of February, 2005 at the Ali Institute Ground, Ferozepur Road. This fun filled bonanza was attended by a large number of people, especially children who enjoyed every event which was organized for them.

 

Syed Asad Ali Awards distribution ceremony

WWF-Pakistan held the Syed Asad Ali Conservation Award (2005) distribution ceremony at Ali Auditorium on February 17 at 4:30 pm. This award is a tribute to Syed Asad Ali’s contributions to wildlife and as a conservationist.
This year, Moulvi Fazlullah and Abdul Qayyum Raisani have been awarded the Syed Asad Ali Award 2005 in recognition of their efforts as conservationists in their respective areas. The chief guest Begum Fakkhr-e-Jehan Asad Ali distributed the awards among the recipients.
