Pakistan is the fourth largest cotton producer in the world and the crop plays a significant role in its economy. Cotton is mainly grown on irrigated land and about 75% of imported pesticides are used on the cotton crop.
Pakistan Sustainable Cotton Initiative (PSCI) (2005-07) aims to reduce the environmental impact of cotton production resulting in improved livelihood of small cotton growers by promoting environment friendly Better Management Practices (BMPs) in Bahawalpur district of Pakistan, and to promote its adoption throughout Pakistan and internationally. The field work under the project includes organizing Farmer Field Schools (FFS) and Farmer Training of Facilitators (FToF).
FFS is a well tested approach to promote the BMPs and is being implemented in close collaboration with Farmer Organisations, Research Institutes and Agriculture Extension Department, Punjab.
FToFs were also established to train the master trainers for the education of the farming communities. During this training of facilitators, the participants organize FFS to educate the farmers which also help participants to practise what they have learnt in the training sessions.
