Hudiara Drain Phase II project:

Hudiara Drain Phase II project aims to reduce the pollution load of the drain through active participation of the stakeholders. WWF - Pakistan believes that pollution load reduction is only possible with the concerned stakeholders’ participation. During the Phase II of the project, we plan to involve various stakeholders particularly the industry situated along the drain such as LCCI, Environmental Protection Department and Cleaner Production Institute in order to tackle the issue and take measures to reduce the pollution load of the Hudiara Drain. WWF - Pakistan also involved the community concerned to take measure at their end so that integrated measures might be taken for the reduction of the pollution.

The Small Grants Programme of UNDP has provided WWF - Pakistan funds to carry out activities that aim towards taking measures to reduce the overall pollution of the drain. In this regard an inception workshop was organised where we invited all the stakeholders from industry, industrial associations, chambers, Government agencies, NGO’s, Environmental consultants and community representatives etc. to inform them about our project objectives and their potential role/support in the project.

During the WWF South-Asia Regional Workshop held in Islamabad on October 04, an idea of a transboundary project between India and Pakistan was supported and it opened a window for environmental peace keeping between both countries. It provided WWF - Pakistan an opportunity for multi track diplomacy in the context of Indo-Pak relationships. Therefore, WWF - Pakistan requested WWF - India & UNDP - India to take measure at their ends. The same work is accelerating at the other end of the border for pollution reduction of Hudiara Drain. This will prove to be an exemplary case study that will describe measures to reduce the pollution load of a drain, which can later be replicated for other drains as well.
