Solid Waste Management Project (ISWM)
The main purpose
of this project is to build the
capacity of relevant stakeholders
regarding the ecologically safe
management of domestic and hospital
waste. The targets for this programme
have been met. They were as under:
• To develop a manual on Municipal
Solid Waste Management (MSWM) in
Urdu.
• To develop
a documentary on indigenous methods
of solid waste recycling.
• To develop a manual on Healthcare
Waste Management.
• To conduct
a one day workshop on HWM.
About the workshop:
According to the proposed targets
of the programme, a one day Regional
Skill Share Workshop on Healthcare
Waste Management was held on held
on May 27th at Lahore, in collaboration
with Pakistan Medical Association
(PMA). The main objective of this
workshop was to help the major stakeholders
such as Healthcare professionals,
doctors and hospital administrative
staff in developing an insight into
the safe disposal practices for
healthcare waste in the country.
Two resource persons from India
were engaged to share the success
stories of alternate non-burning
treatment technology for HWM in
their country. Ms. Ratna Singh from
Toxic Links (NGO), Delhi and Dr.
Sudhir Joseph Administrator from
Saint Stephens Hospital Delhi made
presentations and informed the participants
about the regulatory framework on
HWM in India and Available Alternate
Treatment Technologies for HWM.
Dr. Sudhir shared a case study of
St. Stephens Hospital India and
the successful applications of non-burning
treatment technologies there. Healthcare
Waste Management (HWM) Manual was
also launched and distributed in
this workshop.
