WWF
signs MoU with Virtual University
WWF, the conservation
organisation, signed a Memorandum
of Understanding with the Virtual
University (VU) recently for providing
awareness raising environmental/development
programmes for daily transmission
of at least 18 minutes on PTV World,
commencing from 23rd March 2002.
"The VU is intended
to be a full-time and formal alternative
to conventional face-to-face teaching
at institutes and universities,"
remarked Tajdar Alam, Executive
Director of the VU while signing
this MoU. The Virtual University
is a project of the Ministry of
Science and Technology, Government
of Pakistan, that aims to provide
free IT education to students through
television in Pakistan and other
regions as well. It will provide
quality IT education to a very large
number of students - it is estimated
that annually over 40,000 students
will be trained in IT education.
"The idea behind setting up
the VU is to bring together a critical
mass of quality faculty to provide
world-class education in the IT
sector," added Mr Alam.
WWF's TV Centre, which maintains
a lending library of films on environment/
development and gender/health issues,
will provide the VU all programmes
free of cost. WWF's TV Center not
only provides well-produced, quality
information but also organizes travelling
environmental films, exclusive in-house
screening for educational institutions
and dubbing of films into Urdu.
The TV Center also collaborates
with production houses for new production
ventures.
