Over 250 teachers
from CDGK Elementary College
of Education participated in
World Fisheries Day Seminar
World Fisheries
Day (WFD) is celebrated on Nov
21 every year. This day was
declared by World Forum of Fisher
Peoples (WFFP)—international
organization working with fisher
folk communities from India,
Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
Fisheries, being one of the
important sectors of Pakistani
economy, yield over US$ 100
million foreign exchange annually
and provides livelihood for
over a million fisher folk communities
through out coastal region.
A fishery is one of the two
main parts of WWF’s European
Union funded project —
Tackling Poverty in Coastal
Communities of Pakistan.
WWF-Pakistan organized awareness
raising seminar for over 250
trainee teachers and staff of
CDGK Elementary College of Education,
Gulberg on Fisheries of Pakistan
as a part of dissemination of
information and sharing lesson
learnt in EU funded project.
Mr. Shameer Ali Prasla, Environmental
Education and Communication
Officer of WWF–Pakistan
shared various issues and challenges
of fisheries sector. Every day
over 300 million gallon of sewerage
water poured into sea at Karachi,
posing serious threat to fish
catch. On other hand marrow
nets like Bhola-Gujja, Qatra
etc do not spare even the juvenile
fish.
Over-fishing combined with too
many player and illegal fishing
practices causing greater threat
which is compounded by deep-sea
trawling. These issues put livelihood
of over million fisher folk
communities at stack.
WWF-P conducted various workshops
and trainings to address these
issues including consultative
workshop to develop draft National
Fisheries Policy in collaboration
with Federal, Provincial and
Local agencies.
