400 school students and volunteers
cleaned the turtle beach and
marked formal inauguration of
Green Learn-n-Fun – 2005
WWF- Pakistan,
Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC)
and City District Government
Schools jointly organized a
beach cleaning activity on Saturday
Nov 19, 2005 at Sandspit turtle
beach, Karachi. This activity
marked launching of Green Learn-n-Fun-2005
— an environmental education
program for CDGK Schools.

The program
was first time launched in 2003
by WWF-Pakistan in collaboration
with Sui Southern Gas Company
for CDGK Schools and continued
in subsequent years.
The program provided students
and teachers with the opportunity
to learn about nature and gain
first hand information of coastal
wetlands, marine turtles and
mangroves forest system in Sandspit
area. Total 1527 students and
teachers from 55 CDGK Schools
and nearly 30 education department’s
officials have been benefited
through this program so far.
This year, visits for 1500 students
and teachers from 50 CDGK schools
are planned. In addition, for
the first time, Master Trainers
also visit and deliver lectures/presentations
to 50 other CDGK schools, benefiting
over 5000 students and teachers.

formally inaugurated the beach
cleaning activity. Nearly 400
school students, teachers, staff
of SSGC, WWF-Pakistan and local
communities and NGOs removed
nearly 2000 kg of solid waste
from 2.5 km stretch of Sandspit
turtle beach. The program commenced
at 0930 hrs and continued till
about 1100 hrs.
Mr. Ejaz Wasay, along with Mr.
Gul Hasan, Head of Admin Dept.,
SSGC, and Mr. Ghulam Qadir Shah,
Manager Conservation Sindh,
WWF-P along with teachers and
students released 46 turtle
hatchlings into sea.
Students also presented Urdu
poem “Aalodgee se aik
mulaqaat” and deliver
speeches on pollution and conservation
themes in prize distribution
ceremony followed the beach
cleaning program. CDGK Sindhi
Muslim School, Jamshed Town
won overall 1st price in Green
Learn-n-Fun-2004 program. Speaking
at the occasion he said that
SSGC is proactively working
to conserve natural resources,
especially forest. He informed
audience that SSGC provided
gas in Baba Bhit and other nearby
islands in Manora area, which
is first project of its kind.
“We plant nearly 100,000
plants annually in various parts
of Sindh and Balochistan and
schools are most welcome to
participate in ongoing plantation
activity” Mr. Ejaz Wasay
invited schools.
Mr. Abdul Ghani, President of
Fisher-folk Development Organization
– a community based organization
in Sandspit thanked SSGC and
WWF for providing gas in their
villages – Kakapir, Shamspir
and Baba Bhit.
