Pakistan is facing a growing water crisis, with major cities like Karachi and Lahore under severe pressure due to over-extraction, pollution, and poor water governance. Karachi experiences a daily shortfall of over 500 million gallons, while vital freshwater sources such as Keenjhar Lake and the Indus Delta are rapidly deteriorating from industrial waste, reduced inflows, and climate change. In Lahore, excessive groundwater pumping and untreated wastewater continue to threaten long-term water security.
Without urgent, integrated action, these challenges will increasingly impact public health, ecosystems, and economic stability.
"Building Water-Sensitive Societies: Collaborative Solutions for Freshwater Resilience and Sustainability" is a programme designed to restore nature by advancing sustainable water management, fostering community-led water stewardship, and enhancing climate resilience in urban areas, starting with Karachi and Lahore. This five-year initiative (2025–2029) is being implemented by WWF-Pakistan in partnership with GSK.
Project locations include Karachi, Keenjhar Lake, the Indus Delta, and Lahore.
By 2030, the programme aims to:
-
Improve the quality, availability, and sustainable use of freshwater resources
-
Restore degraded ecosystems using nature-based solutions
-
Strengthen climate resilience and biodiversity in urban settings
-
Promote inclusive governance and systemic policy change
